Go For Your Goals: Perfect is Not Real, but Averages Are

Updated: Oct 31, 2019

There are many of us who strive to be perfect in an imperfect world. There’s no such thing as the perfect person, but you can strive to become the best version of yourself. Through mindfulness of your thoughts and actions you can accomplish anything.

You know you’ve heard the saying practice makes perfect, but what they’re really trying to say is: do it enough and you’ll become great. Essentially, up your averages! If you have goals and you take actions directly related to those goals, even baby steps will eventually get you there. We live in a world that seemly is getting faster. Faster food, faster internet, faster shopping, faster payment, fast diets and weight loss… The question is: Do those things really make us faster or are they making the conveniences of life warp our perception of how things should be?

Let me clarify with some examples. If you want to be a writer, you have to start. Chances are your first writings are going to suck. In fact, you may have to write for years in order to start producing good material. Stephen King wrote everyday for 10 years before publishing a book. Someone great said something along the lines of: “if you’re going to be a photographer, just remember your first 10,000 pictures are you worst”. Talent doesn’t happen over time. When you do something enough times, you become better at it, whether they be good or bad habits. Always be careful and conscious of your actions.

Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.” - Kevin Durant

We humans are creature of habits and routines. We must be careful on what we do all the time. How we average our time strongly defines our daily life. Everyday you have a certain routine: eat, poop, and sleep. It’s the things you do in-between that define you. In fact, even your sleeping and eating habits can say something about you and your life

No Creature is Perfect

Truthfully, no one is perfect but anyone can strive to do better. You have to decide what being better means to you. Everyone is different, that’s what makes us all beautiful. Pick who you want to be and become that person. Just remember, it’s not about being perfect. It’s about having a good average.

Make a Plan

Find exactly what you want to improve, start a plan how to do it, and then execute. Let me tell you, it’s going to take a lot of work. The concept is easy, but consistency is where most fall out. In my opinion, we live in a world of lazy sprinters when life is really about the marathon. We admire professional athletes because they put in the work and took it to the next level; they have a clear focus and goals. You know how many shots Michael Jordan missed? Something like 3,000, but his average is what made him the best. You will fail, but it’s your choice to get up.

Free will is what makes us the amazing creatures that we are today. Remember, be mindful. Figure out what it is you’re meant to do, and do it over and over again, until you have “perfected” (raised your average to greatness) the clear and concise goals you see fit for your reality.
